Ben Tracy Discusses How to Keep Your Family Safe From Online Predators

In this five minute video, Ben Tracy shares the story of a teacher and coach who was arrested on 17 counts criminal sexual abuse. This individual, like so many other pedophiles, used social media as his way of communicating with his victims.

Ben goes on to share tips for both parents and kids about how to stay safe online. He recommends that parents not allow their kids to keep devices in their bedrooms at night. Online predators often target children at times when they know the parents won’t catch them. Additionally, Ben suggests parents have frequent conversations with their kids so they feel comfortable going to their parents if something happens online. Finally, Ben advises parents set the rules for online behavior before giving their kids access to devices. Safe Social Network offers a free Family Technology Agreement to help families set rules for online behavior.

Ben then explains to kids why it is so important to tell their parents and law enforcement when they are contacted by an online predators. Families should include screenshots, the social media handle of the online predator, and a typed account of exactly what happened.
